The Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA Resource Centre), Nigeria’s foremost anti-corruption civil society organization, commends the recent Supreme Court judgment affirming the legality of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). This landmark ruling marks a significant victory not only for Nigeria’s anti-graft institutions but for all Nigerians, who have been denied the dividends of democracy and development by corrupt politicians, seeking to dismantle the EFCC to evade accountability.
In a statement signed by HEDA’s Chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, the anti-corruption group described the attempts by those state governors to have the EFCC scrapped under the guise of challenging its legality as a brazen attempt to weaken Nigeria’s anti-corruption framework and maintain impunity for political corruption.
According to Suraju, “By affirming the EFCC’s constitutionality, the Supreme Court has decisively closed the door on these shameless efforts of the corrupt politicians and their retinue of enabling lawyers to compromise Nigeria’s fight against corruption and secure unchecked avenues for siphoning public funds.”
Furthermore, the anti-corruption organization commends the anti-corruption agencies for the ongoing commitments to interrogate, investigate, and prosecute corrupt politicians and politically exposed persons. The agencies efforts are vital to ensuring accountability at the highest levels, and the ruling underscored the importance of an active and empowered anti-corruption body.
“As an organization dedicated to combating corruption and fostering accountability in governance, HEDA reaffirms its support for the EFCC and other anti-graft agencies. We believe that the fight against corruption requires a united front, and we urge all Nigerians to stand behind these efforts.
