MAINTAINING FRIENDSHIPS AMIDST POLITICAL DIFFERENCES
As the political season commences, it is inevitable that emotions will run high. Individuals will support different candidates, defend various political parties, and engage in heated debates over contentious issues. However, it is important for us to remain level-headed and not allow political differences to destroy valuable friendships and personal relationships.
One of the most disheartening aspects of politics is the rapid deterioration of long-standing friendships simply because people hold different political affiliations or support different candidates. It is therefore crucial to draw a clear line between politics and personal relationships.
Our friends, family members, neighbours, and colleagues are not under any obligation to share our political views. We can disagree respectfully and still maintain a deep sense of mutual respect. It is possible to have opposing political opinions, engage in constructive debates, and still sit together to share a meal or participate in social activities.
Politics is temporary, but genuine relationships are often far more profound and enduring. Election campaigns will eventually come and go, while the noise, tension, and emotions surrounding them will ultimately fade away. However, the people who have stood by us through difficult times may remain an important part of our lives long after the elections are over.
We should passionately advocate for the candidates, parties, and policies we believe in. We should also be free to express our opinions and engage in meaningful political discussions. Nevertheless, we must not sacrifice our friendships, family relationships, personal peace, or mutual respect in the process.
As citizens, we must recognise that political differences do not have to make us enemies. Democracy thrives when people are free to hold different opinions without hatred, insults, intolerance, or unnecessary hostility.
Let us therefore strive to preserve the integrity of our friendships and relationships. Let us refuse to allow politics to create divisions where there should be understanding, respect, and empathy.
As the political season gathers momentum, let us remember that elections will come and go, but humanity and relationships should remain. We can support different candidates and still remain friends. We can belong to different political parties and still respect one another.
Please, let us prioritise the preservation of our personal relationships and maintain a spirit of tolerance, respect, and empathy, even in the face of political disagreements.
