The Coalition of NGOs and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Kogi State on Wednesday 10th December, 2025  held a sensitization road walk to commemorate the 2025 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

Speaking at the event, which concluded at the premises of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Acharu Okpanachi, emphasized that gender-based violence is not just a women’s issue but a family, community, economic, moral, and development issue that affects the growth and wellbeing of children.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, she noted that violence against women, girls, and persons with disabilities affects productivity, destabilizes communities, and destroys the fabric of society.

According to her, “When a woman or girl suffers violence, an entire family suffers. When a child is abused, the future is threatened. And when society normalizes silence, injustice becomes a culture.”

She assured that the ministry will continue to support and collaborate with stakeholders to end violence against women and girls in the state. She also urged mothers and caregivers to remain vigilant and protect their wards.

The Team Lead for the 2025 16 Days of Activism, Barr. Lilian Okolo, highlighted the challenges faced by survivors and called for stronger government collaboration with stakeholders to eradicate the menace.

Also speaking, the Executive Director of RECEF, Muraina Idris, stated that this year’s theme — “Unite to End Digital Violence Against Women and Girls” — is particularly important, noting that technology-related abuse is becoming more prevalent.

He explained that NGOs and CSOs are working to ensure that sexual assault referral centers across the state are functional and equipped to support survivors.

He appealed to the Ministry of Women Affairs to intensify efforts to strengthen these centers.

In her remarks, Joy Oluwaseun Akinola, the State Coordinator of African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) Nigeria Kogi State Branch said this year’s activism stands out because of the improved collaboration between government, stakeholders, NGOs, and CSOs. She advocated for more investment in infrastructure and survivor support systems to help victims overcome trauma.
