KOGI DESERVES AN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT DESPITE ITS PROXIMITY TO ABUJA

The ongoing debate surrounding the proposed international airport in Kogi State has continued to generate mixed reactions, with some critics describing it as a misplaced priority. However, a more objective and forward-looking assessment reveals that the project is not only timely but long overdue.

For a state as historically significant and strategically positioned as Kogi, the development of an international airport represents a critical step toward economic transformation and regional integration.

Historically, Kogi State occupies a unique place in Nigeria’s evolution. Lokoja, the state capital, served as the first administrative headquarters of the country during the colonial era. Records also indicate that Lord Frederick Lugard first arrived in Lokoja by air—an early testament to the area’s relevance in aviation history.

In addition, during the peak of operations at the Ajaokuta Steel Company, expatriate experts, including Russian engineers, utilized a cargo airstrip to support industrial activities. These historical precedents clearly show that aviation infrastructure in Kogi is not a novel concept, but rather a continuation of an established legacy.

Geographically, Kogi is rightly referred to as the “Confluence State.” It sits at the heart of Nigeria, sharing boundaries with about ten states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This central positioning naturally places Kogi at the crossroads of transportation, commerce, and logistics.

An international airport in Kogi would therefore serve not only the state but also function as a strategic hub connecting multiple regions across the country. It would ease travel, enhance connectivity, and reduce pressure on already congested airports.

Beyond its geographic advantage, the economic implications of such a project are immense. An international airport has the capacity to attract investors, boost tourism, and facilitate trade. Improved accessibility enables the efficient movement of goods and services, while also increasing investor confidence in the state’s economic potential.

The presence of an airport is often a strong indicator of readiness for large-scale economic activity, and Kogi should not be left behind.
It is also important to dispel the notion that proximity to Abuja makes the project unnecessary. Development is not determined by distance alone. Globally, many cities operate multiple airports within close proximity due to demand, convenience, and strategic planning.

The proposed Kogi airport would serve complementary purposes such as cargo operations, regional connectivity, and the promotion of local industries, rather than duplicating the functions of the Abuja airport.
Furthermore, the project aligns with the broader vision of positioning Kogi State as a destination for business and tourism. The state is richly endowed with natural resources, cultural heritage, and untapped investment opportunities. Enhanced air connectivity will significantly improve access, making Kogi more attractive to both local and international investors, as well as tourists.

In conclusion, the construction of an international airport in Kogi State is not a misplacement of priorities but a strategic investment in the future. It builds on historical foundations, leverages the state’s central location, and opens new pathways for economic growth and development. Rather than resisting progress, stakeholders should embrace this initiative as a bold step toward unlocking Kogi’s full potential and securing its place as a key player in Nigeria’s economic landscape.

I therefore commend the Executive Governor of Kogi State, the Chief Servant, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, for his political will and commitment to facilitating the take-off of this vital project. May God grant him the wisdom and strength to continue transforming Kogi State to enviable heights.

Concerned Kogi Citizen
Rufai Momoh, from Lagos State
