The Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, has called on youths in the state to reject being used as instruments of political violence ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He gave the warning on Saturday at the State Police Command Headquarters, Lokoja, during the commemoration of the 2026 International Youth Day with the theme _“Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.”

Addressing a gathering of youth leaders, religious bodies and government representatives, CP Kankarofi said young people are not just leaders of tomorrow but active partners in securing peace today.

“Your energy, creativity, influence and understanding of the digital space can either contribute to peace and development or be exploited to create division and violence,” he said.

He added that “As a Command, we believe that policing cannot be effective without the active participation and trust of young people.”

The Police Commissioner specifically urged youths to be responsible with social media and avoid spreading fake news and hate.

“Do not allow yourselves to become instruments for spreading false information, inciting violence or promoting hatred. Verify information before sharing it, disagree without violence, and remember that what is posted online can have real consequences offline.”
With elections approaching, CP Kankarofi charged youths to stay away from political violence.

“As we approach future electoral activities, I urge our youths to reject the temptation to serve as instruments of political violence.

No political ambition is worth your life, your freedom or your future. Participate peacefully, exercise your civic rights responsibly and hold firmly to the belief that your future is indeed greater than political and digital thuggery.”

The event featured a Youth Campaign Walk and a moderated Police–Youth Dialogue aimed at building trust between security agencies and young people.

A panel of discussants, including religious leaders organization,NGOs and government representatives, emphasized the role of parents in discouraging anti-social behavior among children, especially during election periods.

They also encouraged youths to trust and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible intelligence.

“When you see something, say something. Together, we fight crimes and win,” the Commissioner declared.

CP Kankarofi reaffirmed the commitment of the Kogi Police Command to partner with youths to maintain peace, security, and development in the state.
